Event Description

Talking Substance - Puhuvaa ainetta
Art Medal in a Global World - Nearby Sculptures
Mitalitaidetta maailmalta – kuvanveistoa läheltä
17.6. - 29.8.2010

In summer 2010 Tampere Art Museum will present the latest medallic art from around the world in the exhibition Art Medal in a Global World. The event begins with an international art medal congress at Tampere Hall that will be attended by collectors, artists, experts and other medallic art enthusiasts from around 40 countries. The patron of the congress is Tarja Halonen, President of the Republic of Finland.

Medallic art is not easy to define. A medal is generally considered to be a small round double-sided object that is either hammered or cast from bronze. This definition has been called into question repeatedly. At the last medallic art congress in Colorado Springs in 2007, approximately half of the medals were manufactured from a wide variety of materials using different techniques.

In many ways modern medals are part of the prevailing art orientation. To highlight this interpretation, Tampere Art Museum will exhibit sculptures by local artists alongside the medals. Medallic art is presented as a natural extension of sculpture by adorning the global offerings with locally produced sculptures.

The congress is organised by Tampere Art Museum and the Guild of Medallic Art in Finland, whose collection is housed by the museum, in partnership with FIDEM (Fédération Internationale de la Médaille d’Art). A special medal designed by local sculptor Assi Madekivi will also be unveiled to commemorate the congress.

The exhibition is open to the public from 17 June to 29 August 2010. The congress will be held from 16 to 19 June 2010.
